A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:
B. Borooah College was incepted during the British era in 1943, not with colonial aroma but with Nationalistic passion of high order of bringing education within the reach of common man fighting tooth and nail to earn as well as to learn. Naturally, traditional common Arts faculties such as Economics, Language, English, History and Philosophy were incorporated in the syllabi. The processes continued for long two decades. Education as a selective subject was in nascent and embryonic stage then in our state. Thus, education has emerged as popular subject and increasingly spreading its wings throughout our country. As a subject it has deeply rooted in USA and other modern European countries as well as for the East.
The student pressure was being increasingly felt at college year after year. Eventually it so happened that B. Borooah College being a premier institute of higher learning had to bow down to the pressure of the students and took the initiative to introduce this popular subject in the year 1962. Prof. Biren Talukdar took the onerous duty of heading the Department on a part time basis with skeletal staff. During the critical time Prof. Thaneswar Boro joined as a part time Lecturer to assist the department. Finally, Prof. Thaneswar Boro joined the Department on full time basis in 1965 and became the Head of the Department. After that with his effort in the year 1967 Honors course was started in the Department. Eventually as an active political worker to serve the masses Prof. Thaneswar Boro contested as an AGP candidate in State Assembly Election in 1985. He was elected and adored as cabinet rank Minister of Education which is an extra-ordinary achievement on the part of the college. Now the Department has the strength of 5 (five) full time faculties.
The Department is now running smoothly showing consistently encouraging result in Pass-course as well as in Major courses with first- and second-class categories.
