Department of English

History of the Department

Date of Establishment : 1943
Opening of Intermediate Course : 1943
Opening of English Honours Course : 1972-73
Founder Teachers : Suren Mohan Das, S.K. Dasgupta

When the country was in the midst of the Quit India Movement, some leading personalities of Assam resolved to start a night college in Gauhati. The motto adopted was Learning while Earning. Accordingly, B. Borooah College was started in 1943 and, since then, the college has been engaged in imparting quality higher education. The Department of English was established at the time of the inception of the college. It takes pride in acknowledging the fact that the first class in the history of the college was an English class. The class was taught by late Suren Mohan Das, one of the founder teachers of the college and the first Head of the Department. In 1944, the renowned litterateur and Parliamentarian Hem Barua joined him. A few months later, Hem Barua became the first full-fledged Principal of the college, but he continued to teach English. The Department was then well-managed by Mr. S. K. Dasgupta, an articulate teacher who became the Head of the Department after the superannuation of S. M. Das. Since then, the Department has been well-served by a number of dedicated teachers.

Honours classes (which were known as Major courses in-between) in the Department began in 1972-73 under the headship of S. K. Dasgupta. Udhab Kakoti was the first student but, due to financial constraints, he dropped Honours midway. D. Tamuly was the first successful student of Honours who passed out with a second class in 1976. For few years, the response continued to be lukewarm. Since the late eighties, however, the Department has been witnessing encouraging intakes in terms of both quality and quantity. At present, more than 50 (fifty) seats in Honours are offered. The Department takes pride in its dedicated teachers, successful alumni, and a creative, promising and hardworking bunch of students.
