The Department of Mathematics was established in the very beginning of the college in 1943. Prof. Debeswar Pathak taught mathematics in the intermediate classses (IA). Degree course (BA) was started in 1952 with a part time lecturer Prof. Siba Prasad Ghosh, who was then a full time lecturer in Cotton College. Then Prof. Sarat Ch. Kalita and Prof. Mahim Ch. Kalita were appointed as lecturers in the department. During the period of Prof. Sarat Ch. Kalita as HoD, honours course in Mathematics was started in the year 1960.
Currently, two associate professors, namely Dr. Ripa Kataki (HoD), Dr. Anjana Bhattacharyya and an assistant professor Dr Hirakjyoti Das serve in the department. During the session 2024-2025, as many as 105 students are studying with mathematics major at the department. Along with the HS mathematics courses, the department offers important papers in pure and applied mathematics in degree courses. The department also offers various SEC and Add-On courses for the students. Occasionally, the department holds events concerned in mathematical sciences.
The vision of the department is to impart quality education in mathematics with emphasis on teaching with the goal to enable students think clearly and argue logically. In this pursuit, the teachers provide the students with excellent teachings, guidance and related activities. The teachers inculcate the young minds of the students a sense of clear and logical thinking through mathematics so that they emerge as successful and responsible citizens.
The mission of the department is to instill in students a sense of discipline through teaching of Mathematics and the art of problem solving. It aims to contribute the society with hardworking, successful and responsible students. The department also targets to be one of the best mathematics departments across all colleges in Assam.
