The subject Geography was introduced in the college in the year 1964. In degree level courses, geography is incorporated both in the Science as well as in Arts streams. Geography is a multidisciplinary subject and due to its interdisciplinary character interest is created amongst the students towards the subject. The subject gives the students scopes to get direct employments in allied departments like Town and Country Planning, Pollution Control Boad, GIS, Remote Sensing and Civil Service Examination etc. Considering the occupational scopes and interesting topic coverage in the syllabus, the college gave priority in opening the department of Geography for the benefit of the students. The selfless services of the teachers of the department with the coordination of the students the laboratory of the department has developed and an environment has been created which has encouraged the students for higher studies in the discipline.
The northeastern being among one of the most resourceful region in India, it has a rich culture of diversity. Due to social imbalance the subject has got immense scope to study for solving the various social and regional imbalance of northeast region.
The Department of Geography was founded and established in the year 1964 at Pre- University level along with other science subjects under the able guidance of Prof. Tirtha Nath Borkataki, the then Head of the Department of Geography, Cotton College, Guwahati. Degree Courses were introduced in the year 1965 where significant effort were m ade by Late Dr. Madhab Ch. Sarma and Prof. Binoy Kr. Bhattacharya for spectacular development of the department at the initial stage. The department has introduced one month Certificate Course in Geoinformatics in 2014. The Post-Graduate Course has been introduced under Gauhati University in 2017 with Regional Planning and Geoinformatics as special paper.
Special Features
The Department has a rich library having collection over 800 texts and reference books and a good numbers of journals which have easy accessible facility to departmental students.
Well equipped Geoinformatics Laboratory with 15 Nos. of Computer having GIS and Remote Sensing Software like Arc GIS 10.3, Erdas Imagine Professional, Q-GIS, a good numbers of GPS, Photogrammetric instruments like Mirror Stereoscope etc. It is due to the richness of the Laboratory that the department has collaboration with Directorate of Town and Country Planning, Govt. of Assam to train the officials in the field of remote sensing and GIS.Well eqiped Geomorphology Laboratory having instruments like Sieve Checker, Digital Current Meter, Digital Balance, Sediment Dryer etc.
The department has organised XI Internati onal Geographical Union (IGU) Commission Seminar, International Workshop on Geoinformatics National Workshop on Resear ch Methodology in the recent past funded by diferent Govt. organisations like DST( SERB) , UGC, ICSSR, ISRO, TNSA, NESAC,ASTECetc.
