Objectives:

  1. To show the learners correct path to pursue correct knowledge and information of Physics.
  2. To motivate individual learner for higher studies in Physics so that the subject can flourish to serve for the betterment of the earth and its belongings
  3. To open up human brain for systematic and consistent thinking process for well being of the human society.

Goal:

To take Physics and Physicist to a level from which it will be possible to save the earth and humanity.

Brief History of the Department:

  1. Opening of Pre-University: (It is ‘Higher Secondary’ Course under AHSEC from the year 1985) Science stream: From the session 1964-65, vide GU EC Res. No. 4/77/ (b) Dated 08.06.66.
  2. Opening of Degree Science stream (Pass course): From the session 1965-66, vide GU EC Res. No. 6/125(f) Dated 16.07.65, Letter No. G/EC/2/65/16995 Dated 10.09.65.
  3. Opening of Degree ‘Honours’ (‘Honours’ was renamed by GU as Major from the year 1986) in Physics: From the session 1978-79 Vide GU EC Res. No. 335/15/79(31) Dated 05.07.79.

Course offers & Seats:

  1. Physics in H.S. Science (1st and 2nd Year)
  2. Physics (Major and general) in B.Sc course (Semester)
  3. No. of Seats : 25 in Major Course

Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and Extension activities
Visit to the Parizat Academy school under Star College scheme with teachers and 3rd Semester major students to demosnstrate the different physics experiments and to discuss problems with students.

Seminar / workshop / Group Discussion organized in the Dept.:

  1. At least 2-3 Seminars/Talks are held by the department in one academic year inviting resource persons from reputed institutes.
  2. Seminar and Group discussions are also held among the students on topic related to course (Especially in Major Classes)

SOME ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT:

  1. Classes for MPhil. Courses of Madurai Kamraj University was conducted by Dept. of Physics in the session 2006-2007.
  2. 1st & 2nd Year Major Students received 1st prize in Postal Competition held by Department of Physics, Gauhati University.
  3. Surajit Medhi, Arup Sahu and Himangshu Deka received 1st prize in Quiz competition on Ramanujan Day organized by Dept. of Mathematics, B. Borooah College on 22/12/2008.
  4. TDC 1st year student Piyal Chakraborty took part in Republic Day Parad on 26th January 2010.
  5. Farewell of Mr. Suren Deka, Bearer of the Department in 2011.
  6. Trip to All India Radio at Chandmari and Transmitter station at Jalukbari on 20/06/2012 and 30/06/2012 respectively.
  7. Farewell of Dr. Bhabani Kanta Sarma on 30th September 2012.
  8. Students from two Schools from Jalukbari under the STAR College scheme visited the Department on 7/11/2013. The schools are Ambari High School & Gauhati University Model High School. The students were demonstrated with different apparatus and experiments like refraction & Reflection of light Photo Cell, Ohm’s Law etc.
  9. Joining of new faculty member Dr. Somik Banerjee on 9th October 2013.
  10. Excursion of 6th Semester students to Tezpur University on 12th February 2014. Students were familiarized with different sophisticated instruments like XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) etc.
  11. Organized 7 Days workshop “Hand on training in Industrial automation” in collaboration with ETDC (Electronic Testing & Development Centre), Department of Electronics, Govt. of India from March 22 - 28, 2014.
  12. Farewell of Dr. Hem Chandra Goswami on 30th April 2014.
  13. Two students from 2nd semester 2014 (Nirjara Mahanta & Srutimala Deka) has been selected for the Summer camp 2013-14 by National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS), Homi Bhabha Centre For Science Education, Tata Institute Of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
  14. Visit to the Parizat Academy school under Star College scheme with teachers and 3rd Semester major students and demosnstrate the different physics experiments.
  15. Visit to the North Eastern Application Centre (NESAC) with 5th Semester Major students.
  16. Practical Hand book for TDC (Major & General courses) & HS Courses.
  17. The institutional website is maintained from the Physics Department. The coordinator of UGC is from the Department.
  18. Departmental is currently using Automation Software. Alumni members have finencially assited to developed the software.
  19. A few papers of the UG programme have been designed by the faculty of the Department.
