The inception of the Department of Economics dates back to 1943 – the year of establish of B.Borooah College. It was a part of the Department of Civics, which was a combination of Economics and Political science.
The Honours course in Economics started in the college from 1957. Shri Hiralal Gogoi, one of the first batches of Honours students secured second position in the University in 1959. In the year 1995, major in Economics in the science stream was introduced in the college. Since its inception, the department has been served by a number of eminent academicians of the region, either as part- time or full time lecturers. Special mention may be made of Pof. Parameshwar Sharma, Prof. Tarak Chandra Goswami and Mrs. Bandana Deka Phukan whose devoted and untiring efforts have given the department its present shape.
Every year department organizes seminars and popular talks for the benefit of the students.

Department of Economics organizes seminars and workshop every year for the benefits of students. Besides, regular class seminars are arranged every year among the Major students. Every year, the students of the department under the guidance of the faculty members carry out a socio-economic survey of a village. Some of the faculty members have links with different organizations through which they perform certain activities in the society.
The departmental library has nearly 350 books, which are specifically used for tutorial classes.
Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and Extension activities.
The faculty members are either Conveners or Members of number of cells engaged in carrying out all round activities of the college.
